Using Laptop as mixer and lyric scroller for live singing performance

Hi,
Brand new to….well just about everything. I am looking for a better way of setting up for live gigs. At the moment I use audio out from my laptop to line in on a beringher speaker. The mic is also plugged into the speaker directly. Needless to say, there is no control over mixing. I use minilyrics synced to my backing tracks (generated with Band-In-A-Box) to scroll the lyrics as a prompter. How can I improve on this setup to get a better audio mix. Is soundbridge what I need, and if so, which software. VSti and DAW mean as much to me as a space-x rocket to a silk worm.
