Vocal processing techniques are complicated, but they also represent a never-ending creative process with countless different manipulation approaches. One of the most innovative ways to alter the vocals is pitch editing with the help of vocoder effects. Check out the following tutorial to find out more.
VocalSynth by Izotope
Izotope VocalSynth is an electronic vocal transformer plugin which contains 4 engines, 5 effects, and an auto-tuner. It goes without saying that it possesses cutting-edge vocal editing abilities. You can manipulate vocals in order to create electronic vocal textures, robot sounds, computerized harmonies, vocoder and talkbox effects, thick octaves or doubles, and everything in between. So let’s dive in in this awesome plugin and explore some of its main features.
Here is a short vocal recording that I placed on a newly created audio track within SoundBridge.
~Vocal – Unprocessed
Let’s start
Firstly, I will load a new instance of VocalSynth on the Vocal MIDI channel. Upon opening of VocalSynth interface, we can see the top section containing an Auto-tuner. Below is the main section with 4 processors – Polyvox, Compuvox, Vocoder, and Talkbox. Furthermore, there is a section for adding additional voices and this is very suitable to create vocal harmonies.
You can add a unison, all the way up to superoctave. Additionally, there is a mixer for these 4 processors. Last but not the least, in the lower section of VocalSynth interface, we can see an effect part, which contains 5 awesome sounding effects – Distort, Filter, Transform, Shred, and Delay.
I will start by pitch correcting the vocal. The root key is set to D and the scale in Minor.

Creating harmony
After that, let’s continue by adding the vocal processors. The first one will be Polyvox and I used it to add an additional voice in order to create harmony.

Final touch
Finally, I will engage the effect section to apply some Distort, Filter transform and a bit of a delay. This is because I want to put some final adjustments and polish the sound even further. To conclude, let us hear the processed vocal.
