Exciting Filter Modulation

Last Edited: Nov 22, 2023

Modulating sounds with filters is not a new idea in music production. It has been a standard since the first synthesizers and guitar effects were introduced. As time passed, more and more effects manufacturers started to make complex filter units with lots of possibilities for filter modulation of the sound source. Therefore, we can't imagine popular electronic music genres without filters nowadays. From standard low-pass, band-pass, and hi-pass filter types, we now have many different alternatives that are beneficial in creating some really impressive filter modulations.

MWobler by Melda Productions

In the following tutorial, I will present an awesome software plugin called MWobbler, which Melda Productions developed. This unit contains a variety of different filter modulation options. Additionally, it is coupled with great-sounding distortion, a complex sequencer, and various routing options. As its name suggests, this plugin "Wobbles" is anything you send to it. Its interface is pretty user-friendly. I have made a short sequence in the SoundBridge: DAW, which contains some guitar chords, basic rhythm, and a baseline. Let us first hear how that sounds.

We can see a simplified interface version after placing the MWobbler on the Guitar Chords track. It contains some basic presets on the left side, big knobs that control DRY/WET mix, Character, Filter Type Switch, and LFO Speed. On the right side, a metering section containing In and Out meters and a Stereo Width meter on the far right.

You can switch through the presets, but the real fun starts when you press the edit button. Consequently, only then can you see what this plugin has to offer.

Let's Modulate

Modulating the sound with this plugin starts with two different filter units. It is also possible to engage a 3rd unit called "Follower & LFO, "but in this case, I will use one filter unit, which I have marked within the red. Also, under Filter One, we can see many parameters to control. Ranging from Frequency Resonance all the way to Drive and Saturation. Below, this section shows a step sequencer containing many to control—starting from the Main Shape, Smoothness, and a Mix of the Step Sequencer. A new interface appears when you press the edit button within the step sequencer. It has lots of different shapes which you can use to make some exciting sequences. Furthermore, everything can be modulated later on and polished to perfection using the routing options found in the far left part of the interface.

After setting up everything, let us hear how the MWobbler changed the Guitar Chords sequence. First, we will hear it solo and then with the other elements in the mix for full effect.
