Space Rock

Last Edited: Dec 29, 2023

Space rock music is a distinct style that originated in the late 1960s and 1970s. These compositions amalgamate progressive rock, electronic music, and psychedelic rock components. Space Rock creates a musical ambiance rich with space atmospheres, captivating rhythms, and ethereal melodies. The genre is distinguished by its adoption of unconventional instruments, protracted musical structures, and subject explorations of cosmic realms and science fiction.

Origin of Space Rock

Human exploration beyond Earth's atmosphere in 1950/1960 was a rich source of inspiration for rock and roll and R&B. Furthermore, it inspired new sonic elements and sound effects in musical arrangements. One notable instance of Space Rock in its early stages is the album "I Hear a New World," 1959. Joe Meek, a renowned British producer and composer, created this album. The album draws inspiration from the historical context of Space Race, exploring the narrative of humanity meeting with extraterrestrial life.

Notable Releases

The early albums of Pink Floyd have notable instances of space rock. We can see this particularly in tracks like "Lucifer Sam," "Astronomy Domine," "Pow R. Toc H.," and "Interstellar Overdrive." These tracks are from her first 1967 record, "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn." During the first years of the 1970s, the Kosmische Musik movement (cosmic music) emerged in West Germany. This movement basically involved musicians who created ambient instrumental soundscapes with a "spacy" character. The phrase is a linguistic equivalent to krautrock. However, it may also serve as a German counterpart to the English expression "space rock."

Hawkwind's Space Ritual (1973) is a significant album within the Space Rock genre. This two-disc live recording, promoted as "88 minutes of brain damage," documents Hawkwind's 1972 tour. Noteworthy features of this tour included a captivating liquid light show, lasers, nude dancers (particularly the earth-mother figure Stacia), dazzling costumes, and an abundance of psychedelic imagery.

During the mid-1990s, various musical groups emerged in the United States that drew inspiration from the space rock genres popularized by bands like Hawkwind and Gong. Several of these musical groups were contracted by Cleopatra Records, subsequently leading to the publication of several compilations of space rock music. In 1997, Daevid Allen, a prominent figure in the band Gong, initiated a collaboration with other musicians from Hawkwind. He also featured other notable space rock groups. This collaboration led to Spirits Burning, a studio project established to commemorate and pay homage to the space rock genre.

Characteristics

Space rock has inspired many artists and influenced many musical genres. Its experimental nature and focus on the atmosphere have made it vital to ambient, post-rock, and shoegaze genres. Many modern musical groups equally contribute and continue to explore cosmic soundscapes and celestial themes, ensuring this genre's vitality and progression.
